Public meeting on Pelandale project

March 15, 2016

The city of Modesto is holding an open house Tuesday to update the public on its $55 million project to build a new Pelandale Avenue interchange at Highway 99.

The meeting is from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Abundant Life Center, 3120 Snyder Ave., and will provide a progress report as well as information on upcoming project milestones. Officials from the city, the California Department of Transportation and the project team are expected to be on hand to answer questions.

Officials say the project remains on budget and on schedule. But it recently hit a glitch when a water main underneath nearby Salida Boulevard burst March 4, releasing a torrent of water and dirt from under the pavement. The city closed that section of the boulevard and the Pelandale overpass until Saturday as workers repaired the damage. The closure caused more traffic headaches for motorists.

Construction started in May 2014 and is expected to essentially wrap up by the end of the year. The interchange will have twice the capacity of the old one, which opened in 1970 when Modesto’s population was about a third of what it is today.
