The city will shut down a major intersection and Highway 99 interchange in north Modesto for slightly more than two days as part of an estimated $55 million construction project.
Modesto plans to close the Pelandale Avenue-Sisk Road intersection and the Pelandale-Highway 99 interchange for 50 hours, from 10 p.m. Sunday to midnight Wednesday so crews can work around the clock finishing highway offramps and reconstructing the intersection.
“We are going to work through the closures with alternating crews,” Modesto senior civil engineer Chuck Covolo said.
Modesto is replacing an interchange that was built in 1970, when the city’s population was about a third of what it is today. Construction started in May 2014 and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. As part of the work, crews built a new bridge spanning the highway and demolished the old one over last summer.
